THE TE AWAMUTU RAILWAY EXTENSION. Public Meeting at Te Awamutu.
A public meeting, culled by Mr "W. Sioane, at the instance of a number of settlers, for the purpoie of inaugurating the opening- of the railway by public: dinner or other demonstration, was held at Devine's Hotel, To Awamutu, on S iturday afternoon. The weather was very unpropitious, and the smallnes*. of the at tendance may be ascribed to that cau«>e. The following gentlemen were present : — Mes>rs Sioane, Parsons, Westney, Cunningham, R. Boaanko, Wainwright, Wilkinson, Farrell, Teasdale, Floyd Gtesham, Walton, and the Pioprietor of the Waikato Times On the morion of Mr Sloane, seconded by Mr Bosanko, Mr Parsons was voted to the chair, and the proceedings commenced by reading the advertisement calling the meeting Mr Sioane explained that the meeting had been called at the Public Hall, but as they could not get the koy they had decided to adjourn to the hotel, where they were now met. With regard to tho object they were met to discuns he might say that the meeting had beeu convened by him at the request of a number of influential settlers who agreed with him that it was only fair to the district that on an important occasion Jike the opening of the railway to their township that everybody should be consulted. The Chairman agreed with Mr that the occasion was one of great iraportanue. Did Mr Sioane know the exact day upon which the line would be thrown open ? Mr Sioane said he had consulted with Mr Fallon, the contractor, and that gentleman had informed him that the railway would in all probability be opened about the beginning of July. Mr Cunningham said they appeared to be all agreed that there should be some demonstration on the occasion of the opening of the line. None of the gentlemen had, he believed, come with resolutions prepared, at any rate he had not ; he would, however, beg to move, that a committee be formed to collect subscriptions and arrange a programme. He thought it would be well to have the committee as large as possible, and to include people from all parts of the district. The financial part of the business would be the moat difficult, and a large committee* would look after this. The proposition was seconded by Mr Wainwright, and carried unanimously,
On the motion of Mr Bosauko it was resolved — I hat the committee consist of the gentlemen present, with power U> add to their number. On the motion of Mr Wainwright, seconded by Mr "Westney, Mr Cunningham was appointed chairman of the committee. Mr Sloane moved — JhdtMi Fan oil be appointed honorary secrct.uy to the committee The motion was seconded by Mr Westney, and carried. Mr Cunniugham thought very littlo else could bo done at present, except to take down the named of the committee, and appoint a d.iy upon which they should meet. Some conversational discussion followed and the meeting closed, with the usual compliment to the chair. The committee then met, Mr Cnn-niug-him in the chair, aud after talking matters over agreed to adjourn till Saturday next, at 4 p.m, when the programme will be drawn up. The committee then separated.
