BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting was held on Monday evening. Present ; The Mayor (Mr Petchell, in the chair), Ors Simpson, Rowles, Akhurst and Fraser. The minutes of the last general meeting, and of a special meeting held to consider R. Robertson s application for use of pilot boat for Mr Miller’s survey of the new harbour were read and confirmed. The correspondence was read, received, and dealt with as follows . From J. R. Mills and George Robertson, asking for permission to burn rubbish.—Granted. From A. Frew, for permission to erect fence in the cemetery. —Granted. From Morgan Hayes, asking for reduction of rates on the Shamrock Hotel, on the plea that owing to the refusal of his application for license, the house was now vacant and its value greatly reduced.—On the motion of Or Akhurst, the rates were reduced one-half. A request from Robertson and Burnett (the contractors for the erection of a new store for Morgan Hayes) that permission would be given them to erect scaffolding and occupy the footpath, »fcc., while the building is in progress. Granted, subject to compliance with bye-law regarding maintenance of light. From the Secretary of Southland Acclimatisation Society, pointing ont that the bye-law prohibiting the use of firearms within the Borough prevented the destination of shags on that portion of the estuary within the precincts of the Borough, and asking that special permission should be granted to Messrs Hack worth Forsyth and Constable Howard to use firearms for the purpose mentioned. —Granted, the Council repudiating all liability for any damage that might be done. A letter was received from the Commissioners of the New Zealand Railways, stating that the letter from the Borough re excursion trains, «fcc., svould receive consideration.

From the Survey Office, that application for setting aside section for crravel pit would be attended to. From A. M. Eyes, forwarding list of applieations for licenses. From J. Green, re tree on Mr [nstone’s property which overhangs the road. This is outside the Borough. From 3. H. Roberts, Borough carter, with reference to the action of Works Committee in employing teams to cart gravel by the load.—lt was held that all the cartage work should pass through the contractor’s hands. Or Simpson, on behalf of the Works Committee, said that very little work had been done during the past month except repairs to curbing, watertables, etc., and the erection of handrail on the bridge. Accounts amounting to £4O 15s were passed for payment. It was moved and carried, that the cover of the well at the cemetery be repaired at once, and Mr T. B. McCarthy be notified to keep his pigs from straying into the cemetery failwhich action will be taken.

That the lamp at the lower end of Brook street be shifted to its old position on the other side of the road. That totara timber for now covers for the wells be procured. That the tender of F. Grey, £4 12s, for grubbing the broom in the cemetery be accepted, and that the work bo proceeded with at once. That tho tender of F. Grey for new gates with two coats paint be accepted. That as the use of tec lamp at the Shamrock Hotel is now lost, that with tho consent of the Presbyteaian Church authorities, the lamp in front of the church be lighted by the Borough. That tenders be called for 60 yards of gravel from the sea beaoh ; to close on Monday, the loth inst. Crs Akhnrst and Fraser to deal with the tenders.

That tho proposed formation in Pitt street be left in abeyance. That the Works Committee he authorised to procure a small quantity of curbing, 12ft long. That J. Forsyth’s oiler for the lease of section 19, black 8, be not accepted, That as usual tho sum of £IOO be placed to tho Sinking Fund account. That tho Secretary be instructed to write a letter of condolence to Or Burgess expressing the sympathy of his brother Councillors with him in his late sad bereavement. The meeting then adjourned.
