BURSTING OF A GUN ON BOARD A MAN-OF-WAR.
11.M.5. Corde'ia returned to Sydney from a cruise in Fijian waters on Monday afternoon. Capt. Grenfell reports a most deplorable accident wbiob occurred on the 27th ult. while at gunnery practice, At the seventh round a six-inch breeoh-loading Armstrong gun burst with a fearful explosion, and a scene of indescribable horror ensued, no less than two officers and three men killed and throe officers and eight men wotmded. In some cases the unfortunate m>n were blown to pieces. The appearance of tho Cordelia’s upper deck is almost such ns it would be after a sharp engagement. From the manner in which the gun was broken into smail pieces it looks as if it had been burst by an enormous charge of some nitrous compound, The remains of the gun will be sent Home where an enquiry will bo held. The marvel is that many more of the crow wore not killed or wonndpd. Tho cabin doors were smashed; the top-gallant bulwarks broken and in the battery grout dents have been made everywhere. The machinery was so chocked with fragments of glass and iron that all work was brought to a standstill for some time after tho explosion.
A.n organised Press bureau in the interest of the Monte Carlo gambling dens has been discovered. If the seat of intellect is in the stomach, as some people have held, the two-headed girl must, experience an awful disappointment in not being able to surprise her other half with a secret.
