LONDON, August 16
A useful stand by the Essex tailenders enabled the county to lead on the first innings by 62 runs in their match against the South African cricketers. Stephenson, who in the first innings bowled brilliantly, taking three for 17 and four for 26 in two deadly spells, again produced a temporary collapse among the touiists, taking three wickets for three runs in four overs. Blistered toes prevented him from continuing. Last season Stephenson took only seven wickets at a cost of 60 runs apiece. South Africa were all dismissed lor 223 runs, leaving Essex with 172 runs to score to win.
South Africa’s first innings produced 250 runs (Dalton 65, Nourse 46, Williams 46, and Langton 34). Essexe had scored 302. At the drawing of stumps Essex had one wicket down for 24 in the second innings.
