Patients for Pukeora Sanatorium
A party of some IS patients (nine women and nine men) arrived in Waipukurau this morning from the Auckland area, being en route to the Pokeora Sanatorium. They were met by Dr G. Maclean, medical superintendent, and appeared to have stood the long journey very satisfactorily. Ex-Pupils’ Association A general meeting of the Ex-Pupils’ Association was held last evening in the Primary School. General matters were discussed and it was decided to hold a dance in the Masonic Hall this month. The matter of blazers was deferred to a later meeting. Jubilee Day Sports In connection with the programme of celebrations to be held on Monday in honour of the silver jubilee of His Majesty the King and Queen, the Mayor (Mr I. W. N. Mackie) has received welcome donations of a tin of sweets, for the children assembled, from each of the following firms:- — Messrs B. ,T. McCormick, C. F. Haycock Ltd., H.B. Farmers’ Ltd.. Williams and Kettle Ltd.. and Yates’ Ltd. Jubilee Tree Planting
Mr G. Merrikin, Hatuma, has donated twenty silver birch trees to be planted at ithe High School in commemoration of the King’s Jubilee. Mr Merrikin stipulates that a tree should be planted for each pupil at the High School, and as there are 75 children now attending there a further 55 'trees are required. An opportunity to donate trees is thus afforded to those who would like to he associated with so worthy an object. Otane W.E.A. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Otane W.E.A. held in the libi ■ary on T.ies lay night. A very interesting paper on “Poetry” was read by Mrs J. N. Barrie. A number of poems were read by Miss Moore and Mr AL Banks, and these were much enjoyed by members of the circle. The paper for the newt meeting will be on “Children in Art.” Loyal Takapau Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F. The usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Takajpau Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., was held on Tuesday, April .30. In the absence of N.G. Bro I. King Bro. V. Vaughan presided over a fair attendance of members. Sick pay accounts were passed for payment. Advice was received that the Alward Ritual Shield and District Cup for increased membership, which were won by this Lodge, have now been engraved. The reports of the recent distinct conference were received and distributed. Nominations were called for the forthcoming election of officers. At the conclusion of the meeting supper was dispensed by the social committee. Sporting and Dramatic This week’s issue of the “Sporting and Dramatic Review,” is (profusely illustrated with topical illustrations artistically reproduced. The fine coloured supplement of the King will attract special interest in view of His Majesty’s silver jubilee. Anzac Day observance in Auckland occupies the centre double pages with impressive scenes at the Cenotaph that will make a wide appeal. The arrival of the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, and Viscountess Galway :n Auckland forms a striking page of photographs. Racing enthusiasts will he interested itn the snaps of the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting, showing the leading Horsemen in winning events. Stage and cinema photographs occupy a prominent position, and an Auckland nlaval wedding will attract sjoecial feminine interest. The miscellaneous pictures include sporting personalities. The “Review” is on sale al all leading booksellers.
