STRUCK A POLE

NARROW ESCAPE OF CAR OCCUPANTS Three young men had a remarkable escape from injury when a five-seat-er motor-car in which they were driving crashed into an iron telephone pole on Yaldhurst Road, Christchurch, on a recent morning. The pole was torn from the ground, while the engine was forced back under the windscreen.

The motorists were proceeding south, and when they were approaching Avonhead Road the driver was obliged to swerve to avoid some straying cattle. Before the swerve could be corrected the car jumped the side channel, proceeded for some distance along the footpath and struck the pole. The pole was dislodged from its position and bent at an angle of about 45 degrees.' The car was extensively damaged, the engine being badly smashed. The wind screen was broken and the seats were wrenched from their positions.

The occupants of the car suffered only a few minor cuts and abrasions.
