LEAP OVERBOARD

terrified passengers

FOUR WOMEN DROWNED

By Telegraph-Copyright—Press Assn.

OSLO,.June 21.

The German liner Dresden which went aground on Baku Island and was refloated without assistance, then went ashore voluntarily on. Karmo Island. The Dresden wirelessed the Bergen that she had holed her bottom, and that immediate assistance was required. The Dresden struck a rock and soon developed a heavy list, the water penetrating three holes in the ship’s bottom and flooding the stokehold. The Dresden’s death roll is reported to be four, all women. All the passengers were German workers from the Saar.

The warship Rodney was among the ships that responded to the S.O.S.

The Dresden struck while passengers were having dinner and heeled over violently, so that the tables overturned and wild panic ensued. The liner was put ashore as soon as the danger of sinking was realised. In the meantime the passengers started jumping overboard. All who jumped were saved. The vessel carried 980 passenges and 360 in the crew. She was beached near Karmo.

It is now thought that she struck a submerged wreck not a rock.
