Waipukurau Half-Holiday POLL TO BE TAKEN NEXT MAY PETITION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL The vexed question of on what day the weekly half-holiday should be observed, in Waipukurau is to be opened up again at the municipal elections in May, when, in accordance with a petition signed by 133 ratepayers and submitted to the. Borough Council last evening, a poll will be taken. The petition was as follows: — “We, the undersigned, being duly qualified electors of the Borough of Waipukurau, as shown on the Borough Electors’ Roll, 1931, respectfully request that a poll be taken simultaneously with the municipal elections, to determine which working day of the week shall be the statutory closing half-holiday for the ensuing two years.’’ The Town Clerk (Mr. H. M. Tans(ey) stated that the petition was signed by 133 ratepayers, the requisite number to make it effective being 121. “The Town Clerk assures me that the, petition is in order, so I’ll move that it be given effect to,” said the Mayor (Mr. R. McLean). Cr. McCarthy seconded the motion, which was carried. “I think it is a matter which should be settled by the shopkeepers and not by the ratepayers,” remarked Cr. W. A. Chambers.
