RAILWAY RETURNS

Figures For This Month NET REVENUE INCREASED .REDUCTION OF EXPENDITURE. (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. A statement by the General-Man-ager of Railways follows: —“The necessary adjustment of the usual four-weekly accounting system to the term of the financial year makes the first accounting period since 31st March, 1932, one of 30 days (or 26 working days), as compared with 2 5 days (or 22 working days) in April of last year.

“Comparing these periods an improvement of £B6OO in the net revenue is shown to 30th April, despite the fact that there was no Easter traffic in April this year, whereas last year it was included in the April period. “The total working expenses for the 30-day period of the current year were only £153 more than for the 2 5-day period last year, leaving £BOOO in round figures as the amount of improvement in the net revenue to 30th April. “The actual figures are: —Revenue increased by £BOB4 (from £514,679 to £522,763); working expenses increased by £153 (from £419,934 to £420,087). “The volume of traffic carried by the railways is still under the influence of depressed trade conditions, and decreased expenditure is at present the principal factor in any ■ .e? revenue improvement that can be effected.”
