SEVERE SNOWSTORM
OTAGO PROVINCE SEVERAL ROADS IMPASSABLE (Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, Thursday. The snowfall in Dunedin and Otago was particularly heavy yesterday. Reports this morning are that the roads at Roxburgh and Alexandra are impassable through drifts. The main road over Mt. Cargill was also impassable for some hours. Several motors attempting the passage yesterday came to grief in ditches. The storm locally was the most severe experienced for many years so early in the season, the wind and driving snow being blizzard-like. It was clear and cold, with sunshine, today. SQUALLY WEATHER IN NORTH AUCKLAND, Last Night. Squally, cold weather yesterday was succeeded by mild, sunny conditions to-day. The Limited express from Wellington arrived an hour late owing to frost-bound rails. At Taumaranui the train passed through miles of snow. RANGATIRA IN A GALE CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. For the first time the new ferry steamer Rangatira encountered heavy weather from Wellington overnight and arrived tw. nours late, but the passengers reporW.l that she weathered the' storm in excellent fashion. The gale raged with sufficient force to sweep away the jackstaff on the bow, as well as tear out portion of the railing. For a time a speed of only--14 knots was ’ "
