GLOAMING AND THE HAWK.

WIN FOR FINE OLD NEW ZEALAND HORSE. AVINS BY A LENGTH. Great excitement was current in Hastings on Saturday when GToaming met The Hawk and the scene at the race beggared description. Gloaming was the first to enter ths birdcage, receiving a wonderful reception. The outburst of cheering was no less enthusiastic when The: Hawk was brought in a minute or two later. All eyes were focussed on the two norses. They looked a picture, as lit as it wa.possible for human hands to make them.

THE RACE IN DETAIL. A GREAT FINISH. G. Young, who lias ridden Gloaming to many a victory, was the first to get astride, and the H. Gray got up on The Hawk. As the two horses paraded, round the birdcage many a camera was focussed on them, and moving picture cameras took in the fr every movement. Gray was the first to settle down, the at the end of a furlong had The Hav. k slightly in front. At the 6} furlong post he had The Hawk a clear length out, and had succeeded in getting the inside, running. Gradually Gloaming moved up, until! the pair were abreast at the five furlong post. The old champion could be seen working his way to the front at the railway bend, and turning into the home stretch there was a neck between. The ’Hawk came again, however, and one of the finest struggles ever witnessed on the course followed. A furlong from home they were racing neck and neck. “3 he Hawk Wins” went up the cry, but the final struggle saw Gloaming to have the more in reserve, and respond.!*# nobly to Young’s call he drew out 30 to 40 yards from the post to win by a length. The reception accorded the two horses on returning to salute the judge was wonderful. Cheers broke out on all sides, and as the two horses turned into the bird cage aga n the crowd fairly broke loose, jumping fences and rushing and pushing wildly about j'us't to pay tribute to a sterling performance in the- part of two great horses.
