YOUNG MAN KILLED.
<B> CAR SKIDS AND SOMERSAULTS. A VISITOR FROM TAIHAPE. BROTHER AND LADY INJURED. A fatal motoring accident involving the death of a young unmarried man, named Patrick McCartcn, aged 29 years, of Taihape, and the injury of two passengers, one of whom was h s brother, Mr John McCareen, or Otane, and the other, Miss Margaret Lindsay, of Hastings, occurred yesterday evening about a milej from Pukehou, and in the vicinity of To Ante College on the stretch of tar settled road known as ‘ ‘ Gilbertson's Folly. ’ ’ The deceased had been on a visit to his brother whilst attending the races at Hastings, and it was on Ins way back yesterday from that town to Otane that the unfortunate accident happened. The. deceased was driving, and it appears that while travelling over a stretch of asphalted road opposite the home of Mr AV. T, Will.ams the car skidded and capsized, and after turning three somersaults crashed into a bank at the side of the road.
It appears that the two young men who. were in the front seat thought the lights were fading and both reached for the switch at the same time. They collided with on?: another and in the mix up the driver released his hold of the wheel.
Two sons of Mr AAlJliams, who were about 20 yards ahead, and saw the accident, rushed back to the overturned car, which was lying on top 'Of the deceased. They obtained the services of Dr. Jarivs, who lives close by, but although the. doctor was quickly on the scene and did all that was w.tbi?i his power, his aid was found to be of no avail. The unfortunate man’s body was removed by Messrs AVilliams Bros, to the morgue: at AVaipawa/
Mjr John McCarten was able to return to his home at Otane, suffering only from abrasions to his face. Miss Lindsay was taken to Rayston Hospital, Hastings, and was reported last evening to be suffering from a dislocated collarbone and abrasions of the face. She will be examined this morning, but her condition is not considered serious. The hood and the wind-screen of the: car were badly damaged, but the car was able to move away under Pts own power.
