EDUCATION.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE INDEPENDENT. Sir, — Permit me fco thank you for the artiole on education in your issue of the 10th instant. It is quite time we should put our shoulders to the wheel, and use our best endeavors to remedy the existing state of things in connection with the education of the rising generation. The want of a properly organised system is keenly felt by every intelligent settler in the country districts. If reform is " needed in fche more populous centres, much more is ifc required in places where the people are thinly scattered over wide areas. But for any system of education to be effectual it must be more or loss general and compulsory. Until our legislators can devise a scheme thafc will meet the peculiar circumstances in which wo are placed, I would suggest that the Provincial Council should adopt (pro tern.) the Education Acts of the Nelson province. The experience of several years has proved them to be nofc only thoroughly workable, bufc in a very high degree conducive to a healthy and intelligent state of feeling in society in general. I venture to think that had we adopted the Education Act, 1863, with the Amendment Acts of 1867 and 1869 of the province of Nelson, very little would have beon known in Wellington of Morraonism and other like sonsualiatic and debased forms of Christianity. — Yourß, &o, D, Johnsonville, March 11, 1871.
