THE PATRIOTIC FUND.
(to the editor of the independent). Bib, — Would you kindly inform me whether anything has been done with the subscriptions raised in Wellington some time since for the benefit of tho wive 3 and children of those who fell during the late war. If no steps havo yet been taken to carry out that object, I would ask, Sir, what it is contemplated to do with the money. As one who approved of the object and procured a few subscriptions in furtherance of it, I should like to be informed as to whether it is true that the money is still lying idle in the bank ? If so, would it not be advisable to call a meeting of the subscribers to decide what should be done in tho matter. If the sum is too small to be applied to the purpose originally contemplated, surely there are ofclaei' ways in wliieli the funds coulti be legitimately applied, and the money would undoubtedly go a long way in relieving cases of hardship and distress — of which, unhappily, but teo many exist in these dull times. I am not asking the above questions for my Own information solely. There are many other subscribers who would like to know how the matter stands. — Yours truly, A RTTntJcnTTirT?
