NELSON RACES
The annual Nelson Races came off on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last, the last three days of the year, and if the meeting was not as good as some we have seen, it went off far better than was expected of it. The following are the details of the run-
ning : — MONDAY, December, 29, 1862. The GREAT NELSON TRIAL STAKES of 10 soya each, 5 ft ; colts, Sst 71bs ; fillies and geldings, Bst 31bs. One mile and a-half. 13 euba. Mr H. H. Stafford's b f Maria, by Potentate, outof Mildred (Bright) 1 MrH. H. Stafford's b o St Lawrence, by St.
Aubyn, out of Symphony, by Slender, out of Princess, by Gratis (Davis) 2 Mr Redwood's eh c Regnum, by St Aubyn, out of Regalia, by St John, out of Rakish Kit (Gay) 3 Maria led at her best pace, followed by St Lawrence, Begnuta waiting upon the colt, and this order they preserved until the stand was passed the first time, when Regnum ran up and took second place, which he maintained to the dip, and then began to fail. The filly had also ran her full distance by the time she had gone a mile, so that the bay colt quickly passed the chestnut, and caught the filly, but as Mr Stafford had declared to win with the latter, Davis had to hold the colt back to enable her to do this, Regnum being pulled up. Time, 3 mm. 10 sees.

Betting : Even on Ultima, 3to 2 against Ladybird, 2 to 1 against Otto. Otto jumped off with the leadJLadybird at his girths, and Ultima a length oi two behind. As the horses passed the stand the chestnut was racing the gelding hard, but the pace was too strong for the condition in which Ultima found herself, as the old mare gave in after passing the dip, and was not afterwards in the race, which was now left to Otto and Ladybird, who ran almost neck and neck lo the distance, when the superior condition of the gelding enabled him to get a lead of a head, which he gradually increased, and won by two lengths. Time, 3 mm. 55, sees .

Bettiug : stol on Waimea. Waimea led throughout the race, but the little filly ran very stoutly, and closed up to the leading mare in the run in, but could uever reach her head, and was beaten by half a length. Time, 2 mm. 56 sees.
The LADIES' PURSE of 35 soys ; entrance 3 sovb each ; second horse to save his entrance. For three-year olds, Bst lib ; four, 9st 7lbs ; fire, six, and aged, 9st 131bs ; 31bs allowed to mares - and geldings. The winner of the Turf Club Plate to carry 4 lbs extra, Heats. One mile and a-quarter. Mr T. Redwood's b g Otto, by Sir Hercules, 5 yrs (Coleman) 1 Mr IT. Redwood's eh m Ladybird, 4 yrs, (J. Redwood) 2 Mr H. Stafford's b g St. Patrick, 4 yrs (Davis) 3 Mr Morse's eh m Mayflower, 4 yrs (Gwillim) 4 First heat : bettiug : even against Otto, 2to 1 against Ladybird. St Patrick rushed off with the leaJ, closely followed by Mayflower and Ladybird, Otto in the rear. At the back of the course, Ladybird passed Mayflower and St. Patrick in succession, and was followed by Otto, who raced with the mare round the last time and up the vopes and won, after a severe race, by a length ; St. Patrick a bad third, and ' Mayflower beaten off. Time, 2 miv 25 sec. Secoud heat. — Otto got away with the lead, , Ladybird in close attendance, and St Patrick third. The chesnut mare once or twice,got a slight lead, but could never long maintain it, and was beaten by a leiiglh. Time, 2mm 35 sec.
