CHILD MARRIAGES

PROTECTION SOCIETY ALARMED GIRLS OF 14 TO 16 YEARS HIGHER AGE ADVOCATED By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, this day. Concern at the fact that within two years twenty-four 15-year-old girls and two girls of 14 years of age have been married in New Zealand was expressed at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children yesterday, when the plight of very young mothers was discussed.

After a full discussion a motion was carried urging that the marriage age for both boys and girls should be raised to 16 years. In explanation of the resolution it was stated that it was desirable that the limit for the age of marriage and the age of consent should be the same, as was the case in England. It was also stated that girls under 16 were not physically or mentally fit to bear and nuture children.
