A BRIGTER WAIHI

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETIES GOOD WORK SEDDON AVENUE ENTRANCE IMPROVEMENTS IN HAND A progress report on the work done in connection with the improvements being effected to the western entrance to the town by the Borough Council in conjunction with the

Waihi Beautifying and Tree Conservation Society was presented to a meeting of the latter body by the honorary clerk of works, Mr PI. W. Hopkins, on Thursday evening. This embraced what had been carried out up till Saturday, September 14th, and was as follows: The areas on each side of the road in the neighbourhood of the Mangatoetoe bridge at the main entrance to the town have been roughly cleared, ploughed and harrowed. The ground, however, still contains a good deal of coarse grass sods and blackberry roots and it would be advisable to leave it to fallow for a few weeks, to allow the sods and roots to rot to some extent. The hill on which the Roman Catholic Church formerly stood has been thoroughly cleared, graded and trimmed. The whole area under the pine trees along either side of Seddon Avenue, amounting to 6 a acres, has now been cleared of gorse and the fern cut, and the area generally cleaned up. A strip comprising about one-third ■of a chain on each side of the avenue, for just under half a mile, has been ploughed and harrowed and the sides of the road trimmed. The ploughed area now requires grassing. The total expended out of the £2OO available to mid-day on Saturday last amounts approximately to £157. This includes the ploughing and harrowing carried out to date and also the hire of horses for carting soil and removing stones. The number of men employed has ranged from one to eight. With a view to reserving funds for the final ploughing, cleaning and sowing, the number of men was reduced last Saturday to two. There is, concluded the report, a small triangular section adjoining Baber Street which has not yet been put in hand. Mr A. Leach, in moving that the report be approved, complimented Mr Hopkins on the manner in which he had carried out the supervision of the work in connection with the splendid improvements to the main entrance to the town.

Mr B. A. McLeay, in seconding the motion, also paid tribute to Mr Hopkins’ zeal and invaluable help in all matters affecting the activities of the society.

The motion was then put and carried.
