MEETING OF THE SOCIETY

CITIZENS’ RECOGNITION OF GOOD WORK SUBSCRIBERS JOINING UP A meeting of the committee of the Waihi Beautifying and Tree Conservation Society was held on Thursday evening at the Waihi Borough Council Chambers, Mr W. J. Thompson (president) in the chair. There were also present Messrs 11. W. Hopkins, E. McLeay, L. G.' Roberts, A. Leach and J. M. Wrigley. Arising out of the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting the question of the unsightly telephone poles recently erected at the intersection of Baber and Martin Streets and Seddon Avenue was re-opened by Mr Hopkins, who, on learning from the secretary that there had been no reply to the society’s letter to the Post and Telegraph Department last month re the poles, said he did not think the matter should be allowed to drop. Others present were of the same opinion and on the motion of Mr Leach, seconded by the chairman, it was resolved that the secretary write to the Waihi Borough Council on the subject of the erection of unsightly posts within the boundaries of the borough. The secretary reported that the response to the circular letter inviting members of the community to subscribe to the society had been distinctly encouraging. The first batch pf invitations mailed had brought the membership up to 32 and the manner in which the subscriptions were coming in indicated that the improvements being carried out by the society were meeting with general approval. This appreciation was

shown in a tangible form by a donation by some of the subscribers of more than the amount of the annual membership fee of ss. The chairman remarked that this encouragement was not only gratifying to the executive, but would also be welcomed by the Waihi Borough Council and others having the welfare of the community at heart. Mr Thompson’s sentiments were endorsed by other members. *

The secretary further reported that the bonus of 8d per day promised by the society to the workers 011 the Seddon Avenue improvements had been paid to the men, involving an expenditure of £0 Ss 3d, distributed amongst eight workers. On the motion of Mr Hopkins it was decided that the secretary write and thank Mr Vincent Hollis for his offer to contribute two days’ ploughing by way of a donation to the society.

The question of what should be done now that the ploughing of the areas along the sides of Seddon Avenue and the pieces of ground on either side of the Mangatoetoc creek had been completed was discussed, and on the motion of Mr McLcay, seconded by the chairman, it was decided to appoint a committee, consisting of Messrs Hopkins, Roberts and Leach, to confer with the borough engineer, Mr M. P. Haszard, on the matter. The committee will meet for this purpose on the grounds at S o’clock on Monday morning next.
