WOMEN IN N.Z. FARMERS' UNION

PROGRESS AND ACTIVITIES OF WAIHI BRANCH THE SOCIAL SIDE OF LIFE Following the visit here recently of Mrs Poison, Dominion organiser of branches of the women’s division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and wife of Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., president of the union, a Waihi branch was formed with most satisfactory results. With Mrs J. Angle as president and Mrs H. Thomson as secretary, the branch has in a comparatively short time made steady progress. Between 20 and 30 farmers’ wives have enrolled as members and the prospects for an increase in numbers are very bright. That the branch is fulfilling its mission, namely to bring together at meetings and social gatherings the women and menfolk of the soil for the purpose of friendly intercourse, social enjoyment, and to help those who through sickness or other circumstances are in need of a housekeeper or a nurse, is indicated by the number of socials held and the placing here and there of. a relieving housekeeper or nurse. These activities have been augmented by the founding of a library, which was opened quite recently in the rooms at the rear of Mr Otto Bjerring’s office in Seddon Street and already contains quite an accumulation ,of books and journals. The premises are also used for the- holding of meetings of the branch. On Saturday evening last another of a series of successful dances was held in St. Joseph’s Hall and was conducted entirely by the ladies. On that occasion 90 per cent, of those present hailed from the farms in the district and a most enjoyable evening, to excellent dance music supplied by Mr Samson’s popular orchestra, was spent. Mrs T. Leach added to the pleasure with a vocal item, and Mr L, G. Leopold made an excellent master of ceremonies.
