HOW POITREL WON.

MELBOURNE CUP RACE - AN EXCITING" CONTEST. SPLENDID ENTHUSIASM Sh6wN. By Telegraph—Press Assn .—Copyright. Australian and N.Z, Cable Association. ■ Received November 3, 12,30 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 3. • . The Herald, describing the Cup race., says; As the crowds, the competitors, and the conditions were unequalled in the history of the race, it was only fitting that the best horse in Australia should win. No' result on the famous course ever provoked such splendid enthusiasm. The pace at the commencement was extremely slow, Salitros first taking charge passing the stand, with Poitrel and Kennaquhair at the rear. By the riverside, the three-year-olds, Matures, Salitros,' Syce Knight, and Erasmus made the pace a cracker. Tangalooma assumed command at the six furlongs post, making a brfeak. Salitros was immediately a beaten horse and dropped back. Clever Jim ran to the front at the turn, but quickly vanished. Erasmus shot out and looked a winner, as, though challenged by Queen Comedy, Eurythmic, and All Red, he forged ahead, flattering his supporters, who comprised half of Melbourne, but Poitrel made a run past Eurythmic, and, catching Erasmus at the half-furlong post, won by half a length. Bracken rode" a ‘Well-Judged race outside the field avoiding interference. * Kennaquhair provided a surprise. He seemed worn out, and was second last till half a mile from home. He then followed 'Poitrel through, and would have gained a place if he had a little further to go. ' The Telegraph special says: The struggling mass of valuable horseflesh, straining every nerve and muscle at the behest of the gaily liveried riders, made a graceful sweep round the turn. Then a symmetrical little fellow cutting down the leaders till a mighty roar fell from thousands and proclaimed the winner. Salitros immediately went to the front, Killoni pulling double to keep at the back of the field Eurythmic dropped into the middle of the field, Ecarte wad sixth, and Poitrel third to last, Kennaquhair being behind him. Poitrel was bumped into a handy position at -the mile post. At IJ-inile post Eurythmic moved up rapidly to accompaniment of roars of “Eurythmic walks in!” “Eurythmio wins..!” But a small, impudent chestnut dashed into the open and Eurythmic dropped back. Erasmus and Queen Comedy led into the straight. ' Then Poitrel bounded the compact ball of muscle galvanising the spectators into enthusiasm, the cheering ;being deafening. The sportsmanship of those who had hitherto been partisans was forced to manifest itself, and the result was that a regular cyclone of encouragement accompanied Poitrel to the post. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. . (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3. The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton this morning, but there was practically no work of any in- , terest. The grass track was open, but Some Kid was the only horse'worked on it, his task being a sound five furlongs. Other horses were exercised, pn the plough, but were restricted to steady pacing, preparatory to the final fast gallops to-morrow. 'Warlike was out doing easy exercise. i , Kilrush was an absentee. He is causing his trainer some anxiety. The trouble is reported to be in'the. feet. Jack Symons jumped four hurdles fairly well at a slow pace. A number of two-year-olds were exercised at the barrier. By “ACHILLES.”The N.Z. Cup will be run on Saturday. Oratress has come into, favour for the big event at Riccarton, and is flow one of the most fancied candidates. Demand, another of F. Tilley's string, is expected to play a prominent part in the settlement of the Derby. There will be a final payment for the N.Z. Cup and Stewards’ Handicap tonight. Rose Pink showed a return to form by accounting for a serviceable field in the Wairarapa County Cup on Saturday. As the stake was worth only ,£2lO to the winner, no penalty for the New Zealand Cup will be incurred. Last season, after running second td Dribble in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham, Vagabond went on to, Riccarton and won the N.Z. Cup, The Martian gelding finished second to Imaribbon last week in the Wainui Handicap, and has gone on to Eicoartdh to endeavour to again win the Cup. Will history repeat itself? There will be racing at Ellerslie on Saturday,, when the spring meeting ot. the Auckland, Club will open. The Mitchelson Cup will be the principal event to be decided. W. Rayner has taken Rose Queen and Listowel north for the Ellerslie meeting. The last-named is engaged, in the Guineas, and should give a good account of himself, especially if the going is hard. Dissertation will be one of the starters in the Welcome Stakes -,at Ellerslie next Saturday afternoon. The sis'ter to Verbosity (Demosthenes—Suratura) has proved that she is very slippery, and her prospects in the 1000 sovs baby event at Ellerslie this week wear a favourable hue.
