SNORTING.

By “ACHILLES.” Rouen has been scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap at the C.J.O. meeting. ; - , .' The Melbourne Cup will be run’ tomorrow. As a result of Ms win in the Mel- i bourne Stakes on Saturday, Eurythmic is likely to be a "warm favourite. - The Westralian crack has a wonderful run of victories to his credit,. his, three last wins including such races as the Caulfield Stakes and Cup and the Melbourne Stakes.' In the latter race he beat the brilliant Greenstead and Poitrel at weight for age, and appears to have won in decisivje style. In the Cup to-morrow Poitrel will have to carry 10.0 and Eurythmic 9.4 (including 101b penalty),' and it is hard to see how the- 1 former can be expected to turn the tables on Eurythmic. Of course, the longer distance might suit Poitrel better than it will Eurythmic, -but the latter has won all his races like a stayer, and if he gets a good run he is sure to put up a big performance. Poitrel has proven Jiimself a great horse over two miles, and he has been one of the most fancied condidates for the Cup for some time past. It is more than likely that he will be one of the hardest to beat, but Eurythmic will' probably again finish in front of him. Of the others the most fancied will probably he Salitros (the winner of the A.J.C. and V.R.G. Derbies). The son of Limelight did not run well in the Caulfield Cup, but had evidently . been allowed to take things a bit easy after winning at Rahdwick, as he was reported to be on the big side. He won the Y.R.C. Derby on Saturday like a topnojtch colt, but it remains to be seen whether he will- -prove- good enough to ■ extend Eurythmic. Dunmore, a son of Wallace, is in. at a handy weight, 7.6, and another one with a nice weight is Scarte, 7.0. Client has . been nominated for the - principal handicap events at the Feilding meeting. F. Tilley also has Mida, Acre, Oratress, Arrowfield, Tempo and Equitable engaged at Feilding. Several good offers have been made •for Rational,, and it is stated that £ISOO failed to tempt his owners.. At Kiccation on Saturday morning Gloaming skipped down from 'the fourfurlonga barrier in 47 secs., finishing very well. - , Rossini gave Petunia a good break and " beat him from the five-f urlohgs barrier, in 1.2 3-5, Rossini did it very, well. On the plough, G. Jones was first out, and sent the two-year-old Mermin ever three furlongs, which he .rattled .ever in 35 secs., a smart gallop. Surveyor, assisted by Truthful over the last three and a half furlongs, ran six furlongs in- 1.14., They finished bn terms, both doing it well. £ - Arrowsmith dashed over six furlongs in 1.14, doing it nicely. Amythas took 1.14 2-5 to cover six furlongs. . - Demand and Isobel were companions over a useful working gallop of a mile, which was left'- behind in 1.51. ’ Oratress," , with Kilgour as a ;companion, ran once round in 2.8, the last mile taking 1.52. Both finished well. Rude got through a nice spin over six furlongs in 1.18. • , Rational was taken back to Hawera, but will be taken to Riccarton in the course of a few days, where he will compete in the Juvenile Plate, five furlongs (w.f.a. with penalties and allowances), and the Electric Plate (four furlongs). Rational is. set to carry 6.6 in f the latter race,, but in all probability a few ’ pounds ' overweight ’will bo put up to secure - McCormac's services. The Wanganui-bred Queen’s Common (King Rufus—Roscommon) won a race iir Victoria recently. Owner-trainer Harry Howe informs a Wellington writer that Johnny Walker is to fulfil his' engagement in the New Zealand Cup, in which event he ran second to Menelaus; them a stable mate, three years ago. Johnny Walker will go south on Monday. Gloaming’s engagements at the C.J.C. spring meeting aie the Stead Memorial, one mile and a quarter, and Electric Plate, four furlongs, both of which events are run on the concluding day of the meeting. Gloaming was unlucky to be beaten by Sasanof in the Stead Cup as a three-year-old, and won tlie event named last season. Gloaming has never competed in the Electric Plate, fh which two-year-olds have a good pull in the .weights at weight-for-age, but may inn in the half-mile event at Riccarton next month. He will not have to meet Mermin and Rational, the best of the two-year-olds so far seen out this season.

On Saturday morning Author Dillon, unassisted and with his trainer in the sulky, was responsible for the fastest work-out, over a mile-and-a-half ever recorded at Addington. He reached the half-mile peg in 1.4 3-5, the mile in 2.9 3-5 and crossed the line in 3.14. The N.Z. Trotting Cup horse was not driven right out, and finished up his task particularly well. The death : s reported from Bulls of Ihe one-time champion Advance; by Vanguard—Laurel. He was a great performer in his day, undoubtedly one of the very best horses ever' seen in the Dominion. Some of his principal winning performances included the Hutt Bark Spring Handicap, Wanganui Cup and Stakes, Dunedin Cup, / Auckland Easter Handicap, A.R.C. Century Stakes and A.E..C. Autumn Handicap (carried 30.fi in the latter event). This was in ■•1.899-1300. In the next season his record was four starts, four wins. Won Wanganui Stakes, Canterbury Cup, G.J.C. jubilee Cup and Auckland Plate. In the following season he won the Wellington Cup with 10.4 in the saddle, also the Zealandia Plate, ran second in the Jackson Stakes and third in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, being unplaced in the Wanganui Cup.
