SWIMMING
AN OPENING: SPLASH. ' SPORTS AT GONVILLE. There was an excellent gathering of those interested in swimming, at the Gonville Baths on Saturday afternoon, when the opening splash of the new season took place. There was a}so a fair muster of swimmers from the Central and Wanganui Clubs. Mr G. H. Bowater gave a short but an appropriate address, welcoming the large number of spectators, and wishing Gonville’s new swimming season every success. He pointed out that Gonville had always maintained an honourable place in the swimming records of Wanganui, and judging by the number of promising swimmers they now had on the membership of the club, the prospects of success in the coming competitions Were very good. One very pleasing feature was,the formation of a Girls’ Club. The movement had been taken up most enthusiastically, and as a result the girls’ division promised to be very strong indeed. He wished the Club an,enjoyable and successful season, and declared the season opened. / The opening splash induced about 20 boys to take the water, J. Johnson being first and H. Yeitch second. Other results were: 25 yards Handicap, boys under 14. W. Jamieson 1, 0. Matson 2. 25 yards, girls under 14.—M. Wells 1, M. Lash 2. 50 yards Handicap, open. —First heat: N. Dowsett 1, A. Tilley 2, K. By “NATATOR.” Wanganui East is determined to be thoroughly up-to-date in its bathing facilities, and with, that object in view_ a big scheme has been launched to raise funds for the erection of swimming baths in connection with the school. The Baths to be erected are to be thoroughly modern, and will be an acquistion to the eastern suburb. It would be a fine thing if those concerned would provide for either a 33$ yard or a 50 yard bath to be heated artificially, so that swimming could be carried on the whole year. . Winter swimming carnivals by electric light would prove a great source of attraction besides keeping our swimmers fit. Wanganui East should consider the scheme, i That keen interest is already being taken in swimming is proved by the encouragement being offered. For instance, Mr H. Lawrence has donated to the Wanganui Centre of the N'.Z.A.S.A. a valuable cup for competition among all the Clubs. The cup has been given for 100 yards’ championship, and I understand the condtions are- that it has to be won twice in succession, or three times at intervals. This trophy will be known as the Bijou Cup, and will he competed for at the Centre’s carnival to be held probably in December or January. Mr Tingey, principal of R. E. Tingey, Ltd., has also most generously donated to the . Central Club a valuable cup for competition among the intermediates. One of the missing links in swimming has always been the ; gap between the juniors and the seniors. Mr Tingey is bridging that difficulty by his encouraging offer to help the intermediate class. The Central boys are very fortunate in having such a good trophy presented to them. The competition will he open to boys of 18 years of age and under.
