The weather was fine and warm, with ?= great attendance, including the Governor-General and four State Governors, for the first day of . the Y.R.C. spring meeting. Roland Graeme was unfancied when he won the Maiden Plate in the last few strides. Roland Graeme was ridden by MoLauchlan. The Maribymong Plate was a great race. Antrian. on-the outside, sprinted very fast at the finish,, and just won. Furious just beat Otanere for second. Salitas, was fifth. Antrian cost 260guineas as a yearling and is trained by J. O 'Dwyer. He is well engaged in the three-year-old classics. Grbat interest attached to the race for the Melbourne Stakes. Greenstead tried to win all the way, but Eurythmic finished brilliantly, and he was loudly cheered. Eurythmic, including a dead heat, has been unbeaten in his last thirteen races, and has won £11,115 in stakes. He is owned by Mr Lee Steere, chairman of the Westralian Turf Club. Manbyinong Plate, five furlongs.— Ant an an 8.10 (C. O. Davies) 1, Furious 9.1 2, Otacre 810 3. Salitas anpeared to get cut out at the start, but was soon in front. Furious led to the distance, where Antarian came fast to win by a neck. Time; I.l}. Fifteen started. Melbourne Stakes. —Eurythmic (Demp- . sey) 1, Greenstead (M. Connell) 2, Poitrel (K. Bracken) 3. Greenstead led to the straight, where Eurythmic challenged, and won by three-quarters of a length, two lengths between second and third. Cetigne was fourth. Time, 2.65. There were seven starters. Victorian i Derby, ono mile and a half. —Salitros (M. Connell) 1, Nautical (J. Killorn) 2, Syce Knight (A. Wood) 3. Midilli led in the early stages from Malurys. At the nine furlongs Salitros was second to last, but at seven' furlongs Salitros led from Syce Knight and Nautical. Salitros was never again headed, and won easily by three lengths from Nautical, Syce Knight third a length away. Strathredole was fourth, two lengths off, Crimson fifth. Morpho Molrdv sixth. Double Bezique seventh, Skvsail eighth and Erasmus ninth. There were fourteen starters. Time, 2.37}. Catala Stakes, one mile.—Ethiopian (G. Harrison) 1, Demonte (J. Gainsford) 2, Bandurna (W. Duncan) 3. Twenty starters. Etive led in the early stages. Damonte was first into the straight, but Ethiopian finished very fast on the outside and won by half a length. Time. 1.40}. ‘ Hotbam Handicap.—Lute Player 8.4 (G. Harrison) 1, Red Cardinal 8.9, 2, Tangalooma 8.6 3. Lute Player was always first or second. Twelve started. Won by half a length. Time, 3.34f. The Derby field was a record. There was some bumping in the early stages. .Salitros looked a winner half a milo from home, and won easily. Nautical was always -well up, and ran a good race, and he was also well fancied. Erasmus was never dangerous. Salitros was originally leased by his owner, Mr W. V. Manton, with an option to purchase for £SOO, which was exercised alter winning a race in December. Salitros is trained by Fred Williams, a former crack jockey. Strathredole, an early fancy, was a moderate fourth. The Derby riband was presented to the owner in the presence of Yice-royalty. The success was loudly cheered. Salitros carries 7.6 in the Melbourne Cup. The outsider Ethiopian came with a great burst of speed at the finish in the Cantala Stakes, and won in the last fifty yards. The well fancied Sir Ibex was fifth. Ethiopian is owned by a New Zealander, William Riordan, and is trained by Maurice McGrath, formerly of Masterton. An inquiry was opened regarding Red Cardinal’s running in the Hotham Handicap, as compared with the Valley Cup. but was adjourned till 11 on Monday. Drumore is stated to be improving. L. H. Hewitt has been granted a jockev’s license to December 31st. OTAGO HUNT CLUB’S STEEPLECHASE MEETING. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 30. The Otago Hunt Club’s Steeplechase meeting was held at Wingatui to-day. The ‘tote handled £16,366, against £11,669 last year. Results: Hunters’ Hurdles.—Staff Officer 1, Blazeaway 2, Tokomairiro 3.. The Taratahi-Carterton races were held in fine weather before a record attendance to-day. The course was in good order. The tote returns amounted to £21,639, as increase of £1966 over last meeting, which was a record for one day’s races for the club. Rekanui fell in the Bunny Memorial, and Ken Tucker suffered slight concussion of the brain. He rallied after a while and watched the races from the stand. The hors© was not injured. The Horowhenua Racing Club has purchased a totaiisator from the Feilding Jockey Club, and the machine has teen placed in its permanent quarters at the course at Weraroa. An English paper mentions that at the Alexandria races a punter staked £1 on a ‘‘six-horse accumulator.” The first live horses won, and the punter had £460 winnings accumulated to' go on to the sixth horse, Anwar. Hurriedly approaching the owner, the punter purchased Anwar for £4OO, and immediately scratched the horse, thus making good hia bet and being left in possession of the horse. The stewards fined the punter £SO for scratching late. ) It is declared that Eurythmic, the Caulfield Cup winner, was Coupled with Drumore for the Melbourne Cup to win £50,000.
