DEARER TRAIN TRAVEL

NEW SCALE OF CHARGES. FARES TO GO UP ONE-FOURTH. INCREASE IN FREIGHTS. Particulate Of the increases in fares and freights oh the New Zealand railways have now been gazetted, and will come iflto force to-day. These are the increases rendered necessary by the increases in pay recently granted to the railwayman. According to tfee Gazette, passenger fares have gone up practically one-fourth, and freights where advanced have gone up varying amounts. The new scale means that the fares between Auckland and Wellington will be 65/6 flrstclasS, instead of 62/8; and 44/8 second-class, instead of 41/10. The return fares will be double these rates. There are a number of exceptions in concession tickets, the workers’ tickets, for instance, only being raised 3d up to a distance of 15 miles, and 6d for longer distances.. With certain exceptions excursion tickets show a flat rate advance of 2/- on each' ticket. With regard to freights, the advance in the case of foodstuffs is small. General merchandise on a 50-mile run goes up to 46/1 per ton from 38/1, chaff from 28/5 to 32/11, and coal from 9/3 to 10/9. Charges for parcels, luggage, and similar articles are increased by a fifth. The following table shows the increases which will rule in passenger fares (single), oh and after to-day, the new scale and the present one being set out for comparison:— New Fares. Present Fares
