OBITUARY.
MRS F. L. PEAKE. By the death of Mrs F. L. Peake, widow of Mr H. L. Peake, which sad event occurred at her residence at Plymouth Street Wednesday, another link with tho early, historic days of Wanganui has been parted, Mrs Peake, who was 81 years of age, was a resident of Wanganui for over 40 years, was of a kindly and generous disposition, and was roted for her many acts of kindness and of assistance to these in need of help. She was highly respected and loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Both Mrs Peake and her husband, who pre-deceased her by several years, were closely associated with early Wanganui. Mr Peake came across to New Zealand from Melbourne in 1853. He subsequently visited the Canterbury settlement per s.s. Ann, which was a small screw steamer, fitted with 50 h.p. engines, and sent out by the P. and 0. Company to report on the New Zealand trade. On her return, Mr Peake came to Wanganui and purchased land on the native boundary near Kai Iwi. He joined the Volunteers during the troubles with she natives in 1860. Five years later he was promoted to the rank of captain and was stationed at Woodall’s Redoubt, afterwards being engaged in superintending river transport between Wanganui and Pipiriki. He also served with the colonial troops under General Cameron on tho West Coast, also with the Kai Iwi and Wanganui' Cavalry under Colonel Whitmore. With more settled times, Mr and Mrs Peake engaged in farming pursuits, retiring 25 years later to their residence in Plymouth Street. Two sons, who are farming in the Waikato, are left to mourn their loss.
