VOTES FOR WOMEN

NEW POSITION IN , AMERICA, 25,000,000 ENFRANCHISED. . NEW YORE, August 20. The New York Times' Nashville correspondent states that Tennessee has ratified the suffrage amendment, thus enfranchising 25 million women in the United States. NEW YORK, August 20. The New York Evening Sun's Washington correspondent says the enfranchisement of twenty-seven million women of voting age is expected to bring an element of doubt into the Presidential elections. There is still a slight chance that the Tennessee vote may he reconsidered, hut this is not expected to occur. It is said the political leaders are completely at sea, regarding the action the women will take over'the liquor question and the League of Nations. It is pointed out that it will be difficult to organise the women, and although more than nineteen million women had a right to vote in many States previously, many of these did not take an important part in politics. The Republicans and Democrats are taking steps to canvass the situation and make a special appeal to the new voters. Tennessee is the thirty-sixth State to ratify women suffrage by a vote of 50 to 46, making the amendment a basic law of the United States.
