TIMBER CHARGES TO REMAIN

(By Telegraph,—Special to “Herald.”) WELLINGTON, September 2. : The Minister of Railways yesterday, stated, in reply to Mr Webb, that, in the. present circumstances of the. Dominion, it is impracticable to reduce freights for conveyance of goods over the railways. On the contrary, it lias, as indicated! n the Budget, been considered desirable to increase, certain rates to meet the position respiting from the war. Timber rates are being left undisjturbed, in, view of the. conditions of the industry. He added: “1. regret, therefore,., that 'ho suggestion for reduction iu the timber rates can be entertained at the present juncture. ft is intended, however, to deal with any anomalies comprehensively in the. revised rate hook, which will he brought into operation when the existing crisis has passed.”
