GISBORNB, September 20. A young man named William McLeod, son of the Harbour Board's overseer, succumbed to the effects produced by gas at the Gisborne Sheepfarmere' Freezing Works this morning. ■ He was engagea testing the gas main for the presence of water — a thing he had done hundreds ol times before — and was found face downwards near the pipe, from winch he, had removed the stopper, life being extinct. Another young man named) Mcßea, who discovered McLeod and pulled his body away, got a whiff of the gas when replacing the stopper, and became unconscious, but recovered after medical treatment.
Weather conditions over the colony this morning were very unsettled. Around the Canterbury district reports were principally gloomy, while in Southland, which yesterday reported gloomy conditions, the sky was blue, with passing clouds. The report from New Plymouth was that the sky was overcast and gloomy, and Auckland advised threatening atmospheric conditions. At Wellington and locally the sky showed blue with passing clouds. The barometer and thermometer registered as follows: — At Auckland, 29.69 and 58; New Plymouth 29.83 and 55; Wanganui, 29.83 and 54; Wellington, 29.90 and 52; Christchurch 29.85 and 55; and Invercargill, 29.89 and 50.
