MUSEUM LECTURE.

The next Museum lecture will be delivered on Wednesday evening by Mr J. A. Gilruth, Chief Veterinarian, whose subject will be "Bacteria in Relation to Disease." Mr Gilruth is a bacteriological authority, and in his hands the lecture will, it is needless to say, be treated in a very able and interesting manner. A fine series of diagrams will be used to illustrate the lecture, and numerous cultures of bacteria will bo shown, and the methods of cultivation explained. As the lecture' is to be given on. Wednesday evening, there should be a large attendance of our country friends as well as townspeople. «

Liedcrtafel practice will be held to-night as usual.

The Wanganui Rifles hold a smoke concert at the Silver Grid to-night.

The Irish Rifles' tug-of-war team are requested to meet in the malthouse at Swan's Brewery at 7.30 this evening. Every member requested to be present.

The Women's Guild of the Dublin Street Primitive Methodist Church have pleasure in announcing that a sale of useful and fancy articles will be held on Thursday and Friday, October 5 and 6. A successful effort is anticipated.

A most enjoyable concert was held at Maxwelltown on Friday evening, when a number of friends from "IVanganui went out by brake and materially assisted in the entertainment provided, 'their contributions in the way of songs, recitations, etc., being much appreciated, encores being the order of the evening. The programme included piano duets by Misses Ball and Goldsbury and Misses Morrison and Handley; songs by Misses Robeon, Clinton, Harris, and E. Spurdle, and Messrs J. Langridge, G. Hicks, W. Johnson, M. Goldsbury, and G. McGregor ; two recitations by Mr J. T. Hogan, both of wffich were encored; and a piano solo by Miss McLeod.

The following lectures are to be given at the Museum lecture hall : — Wednesday, August 23, Mr J. A. Gilruth, on "Bacteria in Relation to Disease"; September 1, Dr. Hatherly, on "The Don Quixote of Cervantes"; September 8, Mr Pattle-Izett, on "Latter-day Caricaturists" ; September 15, Dr. Valentine on "Milk in Health and Diseases"; September 22, Mr Louis Cohen, on "The Story of Tannhauser." Mr Gilruth's lecture will deal with the various germs which cause disease, and the appearance they present beneath the microscope will be illustrated by specially prepared drawings. Various cultures of disease germs will be exhibited. We remind our readers that these lectures are given in aid of the funds of the Museum, and we hope to see' a large audience on Wednesday evening^
