BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly |meeting of the above boay was heia on Monaay evening, when there were present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. Hatrick), Crs. E. U. Liffiton, T. D. Cummins, P. Bell, F. M. Bank Book— A credit balance of £263 10s 6d was reportea. , ■ Meat Purveyor's License — On the tipplication of Mr T. W. Pickara, a renewal of the meat purveyor's license was grantea to the Wanganui Meat Company. Artesian Water — Mr Whitlock wrote agreeing to the termii for artesian water connection. , Thanks — The hon. sec. of the Pahiatua Fire Belief Funa, wrote acknowledging the receipt of a further aonation of £25 7s 6a. The Clerk stittea that he baa forwarded to the Belief Fund the gum of £16 received from the Amalgamated Society of Bailway Servants aud a further donation of £8 14s , from the Borough Council. Mhis was in addition to the £50 pteviously sent. Arauoho Freezing Works — Mr ( T, Mitchell wrote, encloning a number of invitation'caras for the opening of the works on Friday next. — The Clerk was instructed to write and thank Mr Mitohell for the invitation. Museum— Mr J. H. Nixon, hon. treasurer of the Wanganui Museum, applied for the Borough's annual donation of £25. He stated that since June 30th, 1897, they had received in members' subscriptions £24 8s 6a and in the contribution box £18 5s 43. — The vote was passea. Bye Laws'— A letter was reaa from Sergeant Ellison, drawing attention to a paragraph in the Herald re cattle driving in tho streets, and stating that he reoog-. ' nised there was a certain amount of 'difficulty in dealing with the question, as the traffic in cattle forms a very large proportion of the trade of the district, and the Wanganui Bridge was the only means of getting cattle across the river. The Cleric was instructea to thank the Sergeant for his care in carrying out the provisions of tho bye-laws, and to state that tbe Council have every confidence in his future administration of the same. Cobporation Baths— The Committee recommended that £100 be spent at the Baths in providing accommodation for the custodian.

The Estimates : Copies of the estimates for the ensuing year were laid on the table, discussed and passed, subject to a' few minor alterations. Provision was made for the expenditure of '.£2ooo on street construction and maintenance, £600 for steam road roller, £75 addition' to baths and reserves £50. The mayor explained that they started the year with a bank overdraft of £393, and after paying for the road roller anticipated a clebit of £300 at the ena of the year, which was equivalent to paying itii the roller 'in two

" ■ Milk : MrMarsack, Inspector of Dairies, wrote stating that he bad been approached by a local milkman, who desired to import milk from Hawera, owing to the scarcity of the commodity in Wanganui, The Council decided to authorise the Inspector to state "that they would not permit any milk to come into the town from any herd or dairy that had not been examined by the Borough Inspector. Transfers : A number of transfers were granted. Assistant Clerk's Salary : It was decided to inorease the salary to 30s per week.

Town Hall: The Council went into committee to consider the question of the ereotion of a town hall, and on resuming, on the motion of the mayor, seconded by Cr Gatenby, it was resolved to submit the question to the ratepayers, a committee being appointed to formulate a scheme.
