Next Sunday will be Peace Sunday and will be fittingly celebrated in the churches in Masterton, when special prayers for peace will be offered and for the success of the efforts of the Council of the League of Nations. in accordance with the principle of amalgamation recommended by the Executive Commission of Agriculture the Ashburton Co-operative Dairy Company has purchased the Alpine Dairy Company, Timaru. The Alpine Company retains its name and staff. It is expected that its output will be doubled in twelve months. The Ashburton Company also took over the Mount Hutt Company at Metliven last March.

"I am completely befogged how the accident happened,” declared the Coroner, Mr E. Gilbertson,, at the conclusion’of an inquest at Wellington yesterday concerning the' death of Edith Alma McNabb, 18, who died in the Wellington Hospital following a fall from a motor car driven by Lewis Donald Jenness, on the Lowry Bay Road, early on the morning of 22nd August. The verdict was that she died from very severe head injuries received in jumping or falling from a motor car. The Coroner said it was clear from Jenness’s evidence that liis car went into a ditch and that he received a blow on the head which made him unconscious.

The president, Mr A. F. Stubbs, presided over an attendance of 18 members at the annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club, held last night. Mr Stubbs urged that an effort should be made to' reduce the liability on the buildings. The balance sheet showed a net credit of £l9 10s 9d'. The delegates to the Centre were given a free hand regarding voting. The subscriptions were fixed at follows: — Bowling, £3 10s; tennis,, £2 10s; croquet, £1 10s; honorary members, £l. The Union Steam Ship Company’s new trans-Tasman express line, the Awatea, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning. Her arrival aroused widespread interest and during the day several thousand people visited the Queen’s Wharf to have a glimpse of her. Although no attempt was made at setting a record, the Awatea, which loft Greenock on sth August, is believed to have established a new record for the voyage between the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The previous best time recorded was for the voyage of the Australia Star, which completed the trip between Port Chalmers and London in 28 days 121 hours. It is understood that the elapsed time of the Awatea from Greenock to. Wellington was 28 days 10 hours 28 minutes. The actual steaming time has been estimated unofficially as 27 days 17 hours 27 minutes.

Australian season shows signs of being late, therefore market likely to keep steady for the time being. Frozen mutton: Available supplies short and fair demand with prices firm. Ewe: Prospects favourable for prompt shipments. Frozen beef: Moderate demand, prices generally steady. ”
