FALSE PRETENCES
A PREVIOUS OFFENDER. SENT TO GAOL. DUNEDIN,' Thursday. At the Magistrate’s nu Court to-day, Arthur Jeffery Durrant appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.', and pleaded guilty to 14 charges of 'false pretences. Six of the offences had ! , been committed at Greymouth and other places on the West Coast in October, 1935; two at Dunedin January, 1936; and six at Alexandra and Omakau, in Central Otago, during the. present month. The method used in each case by accused was the issuing of valueless cheques, the total amount involved being over £3O. Chief-Detective Young stated that accused had opened hn account with £3 10s at Reefton, but had soon used this money up and then had proceeded to issue valueless cheques freely. . He stated that accused had been convicted of similar offences on several previous occasions.
Accused stated that drink was his trouble, and that he had been out of work and needed money.
He rvas sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences on four of the charges to be cumulative, thus making a term of one year to be served. —(P;A.)
