WAIRARAPA BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board Avas held last night, the chairman, Mr L. J. Taylor presiding. There Avere also present:—Mrs T. R, Barrel-, Messrs Alex Donald, E. J. Wright, W. A. Clarke, J. E. McV. Calwell and W. H. Jackson. In his report, the Principal of the Wairarapa High School, Mr H. B. Tomlinson, stated that the roof of the school and the fence at the baths had been completed and the top-dressing of the tennis courts finished. The only job outstanding aauis the fence round the tennis courts.
It Avas decided to grant the Masterton Dental Clinic Committee permission to hold a folk dance festival on the Wairarapa High School grounds on Saturday, 6th April, provided it did not clash Avith any cricket match or other function at the school. The total day school enrolments at the Masterton Technical School, reported the Acting-Principal, Mr 0. 11. E. Yates, Avere 223, as compared Avith 242 last year. The number of nerv pupils enrolled Avas 113 and old ones returning 110. Mr Yates pointed out that last year’s total Avas that at the end of February Avhile the total for this year AA'as for the middle of the month. He quite expected that the difference Avould be less at a later date certain pupils Avho Avere noAA r in temporary jobs had indicated their intention of returning to school. The roll showed an increase of seven on that of Ist March, 1933. The reduction in roll numbers led to a readjustment of the staffing of. day and evening classes. The board decided to close the Technical School on 24th and 26th April as special holidays. Normally the school Avould resume after Easter on 24th April but as Thursday, 25th April, Avas Anzac Day the Minister of Education recommended the above proposal, which the board adopted. In vieAv of the aboA-e adjustments the Acting-Principal recommended that the second term begin on the Monday instead of the Tuesday and that no holiday be granted on the day of the Carterton SliOAA r , to enable the school to break up at the end of the second Aveek' in December. This course aauis adopted by the board, though Mr W. 11. Jackson expressed his disapproval, stating that lie thought the d.ecision Avould be an unpopular one. Certain urgent requirements at the Technical School in the Avay of materials and equipment Avere authorised to be procured and other suggested materials and requirements Avere referred to the Education, Finance and Works Committee for consideration.
It was proposed to hold tlio seventh annual athletic sports of tlio Masterton Technical School on the Park Oval on Friday, Bth March. The board' decided to send a letter of appreciation to Messrs A. J. Drew and H. H. Hollow, of the staff of the Masterton Technical School for their work in connection with the trowel and casket presented to the Duke of Gloucester during his visit to Masterton.
