AUCKLAND, Friday,
Figures showing large profits made by the Government in the issue of motor vehicle number plates were quoted at the conference of the North Island Motor Union.
One dcelgatc said that the motorists were being badly stung. Mr Batt (Wellington) said that for the eight years to 1933 the total cost of the plates was £88,613, and they had been sold to the for £197,097. The Government’s profits averag cd £12,000 a year. In addition, the Higlnvays Department had to pay Is 6d a set, representing another £II,OOO a year, and transfer fees averaged £6OOO. The whole thing, he said, appeared to be a “beanfeast” for the Post Office. Mr G. W. Hutchison (Auckland) said that the Government should hand the plates to motorists at cost price. The plates were really a means of collecting the annual license fees. It was unanimously resolved to protest and request that the charge bo reduced to cost price.—(P.A.)
