SMUGGLER FINED

AN AUCKLAND CASE. AUCKLAND, Friday. \ Humphrey Owen Stevens was fined £25 at Auckland yesterday for smuggling a wireless set valued at £2O from the Vancouver steamer at Auckland. The duty payable was £9/8/8. He pleaded guilty, but Ms counsel said the plea would have been not guilty were it not that the Customs Act said that the absence of intent to defraud was no defence.

The Magistrate imposed a minimum fine and ordered the forfeiture of the set. —(P-A.)
