BUILDING TRADE
SIGNS OF REVIVAL. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. There are signs of a revival in the building trade, due to the Unemployment Board’s new subsidy scheme. It was stated to-day that a rise in the price of timber was anticipated, and prominent builders urge persons contemplating building or alterations to put their work in hand immediately. Several big contracts are in prospect, and up to 4.80 p.m. to-day the Labour Department at Christchurch had received applications for £76,561 in subsidies under the No. 10 Scheme —£28,731 of this sum representing wages. These applications cover a period of about ten days. The highest individual application is for £40,0€ : 0. A great many of the enquiries are for subsidies for building dwellings.— (P.A.) 11 - ' POSITION IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. In the nine days during which applications for building subsidies have been receivable, 84 have been received in Auckland for buildings estimated to cost £50,000. ' The largest item is for business premise? to cost, £13,500, but the majority are for, houses. —(P.A.)
