CLUB FUNDS TAKEN

SECRETARY BEFORE COURT. Charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with the theft of the sum of £4 17s 2d, belonging to the Masterton Self Help Club, > James Curtin, a labourer, was convicted and released on probation for a period of one year, a condition being that restitution be made.

In detailing the facts leading to the charge, to which accused pleaded guilty, Sergeant T. H. Dyer said that Curtin acted as secretary of the social section of the Masterton Unemployed Self Help Club from 20th July to 13th August last. He handled the proceeds from dances and socials, entering account of* same in a cash book, which he kept at home. On 13th August last a shortage was discovered in tiie cash handled by the defendant, and he was questioned regarding the matter by club officials. iCurtin admitted taking the money and agreed to make restitution at the rate of £1 a week. Three payments of 7s lid each were made, but since October last no further payment had been made. The committee pressed for. payment without result, and on 7th January last the president of the Self-Help Club reported the matter to the police. In a statement defendant said he had taken the amount in small sums, which had been used for housekeeping expenses.
