AUCKLAND FIRE
MYSTERIOUS OUTBREAK AUCKLAND, Tuesday. A fire which broke out at the back of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Mount Albert, Auckland, shortly after 8.30 tonight, threatened for a period to gut the building, which is entirely of wood. Good work by the Mount Albert Brigade, however, confined the outbreak to the chancel and vestry, the total damage being estimated at from £l5O to £2OO.
The fire apparently originated near the steps leading to the vestry, but the cause i 9 unknown. The church had not been used for any service since Sunday evening. The vicar, the Rev. R. G. Coates; and his family, were away on holiday,, but the temporary occupants of the Vicarage, next to the church, had no suspicion of anything being amiss until they received "a telephone message from a lady who had already broken a street alarm box. —(P.A.)
