Mrs D. A. MeMillan, of Masterton, has returned home after a holiday spent in tho Sorth Island. The death is announced from London of Mr Basil Soulsby, former librarian at the British Museum, and a New Zealander by birth. 1 f The death-of Captain R. E. Sassoon, the millionaire racing owner and amateur rider, as a result of injuries received when his own horse fell in a steeplechase at Lingfield last -week, is reported in a cablegram from London.

Professor J. 7>7acniiiTan crown was unanimously re-elected Chancellor of the New Zealand University, £nd the Hon. J. A. Hanan was re-elected proChancellor, at the annual meeting of the senate yesterday.

Sympathetic reference to the death of the late Mr Frederick Exell w r as made at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday afternoon by the chairman, Cr. W. I. Armstrong. In moving a vote of condolence to the relatives of the late Mr Exell, Mr Armstrong said he had been an old and valued servant of the council and had given excellent service. The motion w r as carried in silence.

At a meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Oddfellows, Carterton, the following officers were nominated for District Office: —District Grand Master, Bro. W. B. Brown; District Deputy Grand Master, Bro. K. Kropp; District Management Committee, Bros. P. M. Smith and E. Tilson; District Book Examiner and auditor, Bro. J. R. McIlraith.

A London cable states that Mr Lloyd George was seventy on Tuesday. Interviewed by the “Daily Express,” he stated: “I enjoyed my walk through life. All the same I would rather like a fresh experience next time, one that would be more interesting. I hope to remain in Parliament to the end, but I have done with leadership, though there never was greater need for bold leadership than there is to-day.” Sir William Perry was last evening congratulated by the Dominion exeeutie of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union upon the honour conferred upon him recently by his Majesty the King. The chairman, Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., said that Sir William was an outstanding producer in New Zealand. “We feel,” said Mr Poison, “that the honour that has been done to him is. an honour -to the whole farming community, and I think he has been selected as a very worthy representative of this Dominion for this honour.”

Mr J. Nelson, of Waipukurau, has just celebrated liis 90tli birthday. MiNelson, who was born in London and came to New Zealand about 50 years ago, spent 16 years as a resident of Borneo, acting under Sir Charles Johnson. For 25 years lie filled the position of secretary to the Waipawa Hospital Board, and for 12 years acted in a sinjilar capacity to the Waipukurau Jockey Club. In the early days before the borough was formed, he was also secretary to the Wanstead and Waipukurau Road Boards. A pioneer settler of the Alfredton district, Mr Charles Edward Gill, died on Saturday at the Tararua Private Hospital, Paliiatua, at the age of 62 years. Born at Nelson, ho received his education there and at the age of 16 or thereabouts left the district and went to Foxton to engage in fiaxeutting. After a few' years at Foxton deceased proceeded to Alfjredton to take up sheepfarming. That was fortythree years ago. He retired to Pahiatua 13 years ago and had resided on Masterton Road ever since. The late Mr Gill was twice married, his firstwife being Miss Eliza Harrison, of Ashburton. After her death deceased married her sister, Miss Sarah Ann Harrison, also of Ashburton. He joined the Manchester Unity of Oddfellow's when a youth in Nelson. He is survived by a widow, but had no family. He has living one brother, Mr Alec Gill (Hukanui), and one sister, Mrs W. Newport (Nelson).
