VICIOUS ASSAULT
ELDERLY MAN INJURED. AUCKLAND, Monday. A vicious assault on an elderly man, William Williams, was perpetrated outside the Town Hall shortly after eight o’clock to-night. Mr Williams, who was an attendant in charge of motor cars parked outside the hall, was accosted by another man and struck three times on the head with a flexible cane about three feet long and heavily weighted with lead at one end. He fell to the ground when struck the first time, and on rising to his feet ho received a second blow, this time across the face. A third blow again forced him to the ground, and when pedestrians came to his assistance he was bleeding profusely, and was in a semi-conscious state. He was carried into the hall, where a boxing carnival was in progress, and was there attended to. Before allowing the injured man to be removed to the Auckland Hospital, a doctor inserted several Bitches in his head. No provocation for the assault was given, and Mr Williams was taken unawares. Mr Williams, who is 69 years of age, is a married man residing in Epsom. In addition to an extensive scalp wound at the back of his head, Mr Williams received a fracture of the nose. Although suffering considerably from shock and pain, his condition is not regarded as being very serious. Shortly after the commission ef the assault, constables who were on duty at. the Town Hall arrested a man, 62 years of age, who will be charged at the S.M. Court .with having assaulted Mr Williams and causing actual bodily harm. —(P.A.)
