EXCITING CHASE

AFTER WANTED MEN. SEQUEL IN COURT. PALMERSTON N., Monday. The story of a chase with a rifle after two men wanted by! the police, over the countryside at Ashliurst on the morning of 26th April, was related in the Magistrate’s Court, when Walter Corlett, labourer, formerly of Masterton, 29, and AUcto.r James Jameson, motor driver, 37, denied charges of being idle and disorderly, consorting with thieves, theft, and resisting arrest. Each was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the last-named charge. The evidence disclosed that Constables Fischer and Miller went to Ashhurst to execute warrants for the accuseds’ arrest. When the warrants were read both at first refused to come, but after an argument agreed to do so, asking permission to go inside for their coats and hats. As they did not come out again, the constables entered the house to find both the accused gone. On going outside they saw both running up a hill four hundred yards away. Constable Miller secured a rifle in his car, whereupon the accused separated, and Constable Fischer headed Corlet off. The latter came to grips with Constable Fischer, hut on Constable Miller coming to his assistance, Corlett agreed to go quietly. Constable Miller, with the rifle, then went after Jameson, who, seeing that Corlett was caught, surrendered. In Constable Miller’s car, 1 Jameson produced a sheath knife, which Constable Miller was of opinion he did not have when first interviewed. In evidence, Constable Miller said Jameson boasted previously that lie would shootwith a sawn-off shot-gun he carried in his car any policeman who entered tlie. motor. Witness added that Jameson was a dangerous man, and he was taking no risks. The Magistrate considered the events might have been more serious had 'Constable Miller not been armed. -(P.A.)
