COAL MINING

FURTHER DISMISSALS. STRIKE BALLOT. HAMILTON, This Day. Further dismissal notices, totalling 15, were distributed among miners yesterday at the Glen Afton and MacDonald mines yesterday, making the total at the two mines now 167. Before the dismissals were made 510 men were employed. Those remaining miners are averaging only two days work a week.

It is understood that the majority of the men involved in to-day’s dismissals arc residents of Huntley, so this has greatly aggravated unemployment in the district.

Recently, following upon the first dismissals, a secret ballot was taken to decide whether the men would go out on strike. The result of the ballot will not be known until after a conference with mine owners, which’ is to take place shortly.
