BRILLIANT PLAY. AUSTRALIANS IN FORM. DUNEDIN, Friday. The Australian ladies’ lawn tennis team delighted followers of the game to-day with a brilliant display against the Otago ladies, arid in two exhibition matches, the honours rested with the visitors,, who, at- the end of the day, had won two of the four singles and both doubles matches.

Miss Yalkenburg and Miss Hall were very impressive, showing variety and power of strokes that easily overcame the opposition. Miss Lloyd was beaten in the singles by Miss White ,who was the acme of steadiness and accuracy, and whose driving at all times was deep and well placed. Miss Hartigan, though defeated in the singles by Miss Culver, was perhaps the star of the team. Against Miss .Calver, who is a very powerful plajer, she failed to get the touch of the hard courts, but in the second set of the exhibition doubles against Mrs. Scott and Miss Wake she struck form, and from then on her play was the acctraction of the afternoon.

Results are as follow, the Austialians being mentioned first: — SINGLES. Miss Yalkenburg beat Miss Patridge, 6 —3, 6 —2. Miss Hall beat Miss Pattison, G—3, 6—2.

Miss Hartigan lost to Miss Calver, 4 —G, 6 —B. Miss Lloyd lost to Miss White, 3—6, I—G. DOUBLES. Miss Yalkenburg and Miss Hall beat Miss Pattison and Miss White, G —2, G—o. WILDING SHIELD. A CANTERBURY! VICTORY. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Losing no matches, and only cue set of the thirteen played, the Canterbury representative lawn tennis team o\ elwhelmed a team representative of the combined southern associations (Otago, North Otago, and South Canterbury) on the first day of the elimination match between tlie South Island challengers for the Wilding Shield. The younger members of the visiting team, who are without exception handicapped by lack of play in good company, seemed a little over-awed by the occasion, and hone of the four managed to win more than four games in

The Hawke’s Bay championship tennis tournament was continued at V aipawa. to-day in fine weather. Most of the games were advanced to the semifinal stage by the evening, and the finals will be fought out to-day.
