BRITISH TARIFFS AN EARLY DECISION. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Friday. Tile Cabinet Committee considering tariffs is representative of the three parties and is expected to reach a decision in a few days. The problem is being considered from the sole viewpoint of the trade and financial situation. It is recognised that the position as regards the balance of trade demands that not a moment be lost in introducing remedial measures. All the indications point to the committee’s recommendations being in favour of a tariff and if the committee is unanimous, there is no reason to fear trouble when its report comes before the full Cabinet.

The legislative programme includes bills providing for a wheat quota, town and country planning and rent restrictions.

BLOW TO CANADA.

VANCOUVER, Thursday

Mr. Tolmie requests Mr. Bennett to instruct the High Commissioner in London to notify the British Government that acquiscencc in the English lumber importers’ petition that the importation of Soviet lumber be not interfered with through tariffs or preferences would be a blow to Canada and likely to injure the Imperial Conference.

The Premier of Quebec wired Mr. Bennett to the same effect, claiming to bo the first city in the Empire to take a practical move for Empire trade. Leading merchants arc using the Board of Trade organisation to launch a campaign for a greater exchange of British goods.
