THE NEW GUARD
LEADER IN COURT.
SYDNEY. Friday
The case against Colonel Erie Campbell has been adjourned to January 20. The statements complained of in the charge included the following references to Mr. Lang: “A nasty tyrant mid scoundrel,’’ “a buffoon at the head of affairs,” and “the hated old man of the sea.”
Colonel Campbell plea'ded “Not guilty,” and Mr. Leavier, on behalf of Colonel Campbell, applied for an adjournment on the ground that the notice had been too short and there had been no timo to prepare, a defence. Mr. Sheahan, for the Crown, opposed the application, as Colonel Campbell had iterated that he would repeat the utterances in the near future and intensify the insult to the Premier. He said the police would take a serious view*of this charge.
Mr. Laidlaw, the chief Stipendiary Magistrate, granted the adjournment, as only thirty-six hours had elapsed since the summons was served. Mr; Sheahan then asked for bail to be fixed, or that Colonel Campbell give an undertaking not to repeat the utterances. i ■
Mr. Laidlaw refused to fix bail and no order was made as to Colonel Campbell’s utterances.
A crowd of some hundreds cheered tlio New Guard leader as he left the precincts of the Court.
