HOTEL FIRE

BLAZE IN CORNWALL.

LONDON. Monday

While a Union Jack flared defiance to the flames, which shone far over the Channel, 100 disconsolate guests faced a gloomy dawn watching the destruction of the east wing of St. Austell’s Bay Hotel, Cornwall. Many of those thus dispossessed usually stay at the Riviera, but patriotism prompted them to remain in England for Christmas, their reward being the destruction of everything but that in which they stood. This was not much, because many escaped in their night clothes by sliding down waterpipes. Four fire brigades were soon fighting the flames amid dense smoke, while the guests shivered on the chairs oi settees dragged out by the firemen. The hotel was erected in 1930 in record time, and will be renovated immediately.
