MASTERTON COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County 'Council was held yesterday, the chairman, Councillor Yy. I. Armstrong, presiding over a full attendance of councillors. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £lS'43 12s Oil, the County Fund account having a debit of £-1569 Os lid. ■Receipts since last meeting totalled £6675 11s Sd, including £3Ol 2s 7d in rates, and £2661 2s Id in Main Highways subsidies. Accounts totalling £6941 4s were passed. The District Engineer advised that provision had been made on this year’s Estimates for £6OO £ for £ for erection of Black Creek Bridge, Kaituna. The clerk’s action in calling for tenders was approved. Mr R. Welch, Kaituna, wrote thanking the council for taking the necessary steps to erect the Black Creek Bridge, In connection with the Wairere Road the District Engineer returned an approved copy of the specifications and advised that the work could be put in hand as soon as the monetary authority was issued. 'The council decided not to enforce the by-law providing for the licensing of traction engines. It was reported that the crushing costs for 766. cubic yards of metal at the To Ore. Ore crusher during November was 5s 5d per cubic yard. An application by Mr 11. W. Lee for the council to form and metal the road giving access to his property, from Weraiti Road was held over. The application of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co. Ltd., for the registration of their premises, used as a cattle sale yard in Colombo Road, was granted. The ranger reported having dealt - with 3 head of cattle, 7 horses, and 69 sheep during the month. The total fees collected from May to date amounted to £26 13s 6d. The tender of W. D. McCalmont for the erection of a concrete culvert at the five mile peg on the To Ore OreBideford Road was accepted. The tender of 21. McKay and Sons for the erection of the V, angaehu Stream Bridge on the Master-ton-Weber Highway and that of W. D. McCalmont for erection of Wcstmere Stream Bridge on the Wcstmere road were accepted. The acting-overseer (Mr B. L. Larson) reported on the usual maintenance work carried out during the month. The decking on the Ruamahunga Bridge was repaired and the decking on the Mount Bruce Bridge required to be replaced. The contractor on the Wairere Road metalling contract is making good progress, but has been delayed greatly through wet weather. The contractor on the Glenlean-Wai-karaka Road has completed 10 chains and has sufficient stone broken to do a further 15 chains.
