BRITISH BUDGET.
MUCH CRITICISM. JIOW’L or THE PROFITEER. Assowntirot—Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.; (Received Wednesday, 31.n0 a.m.) LONDON, Tuesday. The Budget lias received much criticism from the Government benches, ■ and probably will get more support from the Opposition ttilin the Government side, though the Oppositionists deplore the dropping of the Premier Is land taxes. The main criticism is directed against‘the increase in the exeess profits tax, which surprised many people, who expected a reduction thereof, if not its abolition. Members of the House of Commons and others representing trading and manufacturing interests, declare that this tax will hamper the country's reconstruction, cause a rise in prices, and damage the country’s-export trade. Supporters of the tax consider that the prices will not be affected, as. prices rose -after the tax was halved. Mr Chamberlain's proposals on the whole are regarded as a courageous attempt to adjust the country’s incomings and outgoings, and reduce, the national debt.
