FATAL FALL.
CARPENTER'S DEATH TN A LIFT
WELL.

A carpenter named Henry Lord was killed by a fall down, the well of a lift in a shop iv Queen street. Alterations in the shop were being carried out and the lift was being altered, .lust before tin- accident a plumber passed the place where Lord Avas working at the top of the. lift, and he noticed that Lord was lying down with his head projecting over the lift well, engaged in driving a four-inch nail iv the ceiling. He did not appear to lie in any danger of falling down the lift. Immediately afterwants he heard a crash and found that Lord.had fallen down to the bottom of the lift well from a height of about .10 feet. A verdict of accidental death was returned at. the inquest, the coroner adding a rider that the statutory provisions did not call for any safeguards during the construction of such works, but the evidence disclosed that there was a danger to workmen and there was a necessity for some further provision.
