Four German steamship lines are offering to take cargoes to British South Africa fr-om Southampton, Liverpool, London and Glasgow at 5s a ton below the British Conference hines rates. The Germans are taking this actiou in retaliation on the Union Castle line for loading steamers at Antwerp and Hamburg for East Africa. A fierce freight war is threatened.
